Three new covers for Orwell’s seminal ‘1984’. Not surprising, I suppose that all three feature the motif of an eye, taking as their inspiration from the slogan that dominates the book.
But I couldn’t help feeling that all three of the images lacked the menace and despair of the book – indeed, you could say that the images only work if you’ve already read the book.
My earlier post, ‘Judge a book by its cover’ shows what I still think is the cleverest image for ‘1984’: a traditional orange Penguin paperback cover, with the title and author redacted, and only visible when light falls on the cover.
Any preferences?
