Going Underground

By June 2, 2022No Comments

‘UNDERDOGS’, Rob Ryan’s first published novel, deserves to be better known.

It’s set in the curious underground city created when Seattle burnt down in 1889, and the people rebuilt the city one floor up, so that ground level rooms and shops became basements.

When a failed robber takes a young girl hostage, they fall (literally) into this strange underworld, tracked by a former Tunnel Rat and encountering its inhabitants. The action is relentless and claustrophobic, coupled with overtones of that other novel about another young girl falling underground  –  ‘Alice in Wonderland’. British jazz trumpeter Guy Baker wrote a jazz suite inspired by ‘UNDERDOGS’ which captured the noir feel of the book perfectly.

You decide who the White Rabbit and the Red Queen are.
