1984… for real

For forty years, the East German State Security Service, better known as STASI, watched over its citizens with a brutal, repressive and highly effective regime that turned citizens into informants against their neighbours and even family.

David Young’s STASI novels paint a complex picture of the way in which fear and corruption affected an entire country in every aspect of life. Oberleutnant Karin Muller does her best to find her way through the maze of conflicting loyalties, where no one can be trusted, and every relationship has a price.

Young sympathetically portrays how a decent officer faces the daily compromises and struggles in an all-powerful surveillance state while still attempting to work for justice. With colleagues who can only rely upon so far, and where the wrong conversation can lead to a prison cell or worse, Muller has to deal with solving cases that often the state doesn’t want to be solved. The STASI novels are highly recommended if you want to learn how an entire country can be suborned and the seeds of its own destruction sown.
